Lamont Roach Jr. vs William Zepeda is a very interesting stylistic matchup, and at these odds, we prefer the Zepeda side. Roach is a very good boxer: technical, disciplined, and a sharp counter puncher. Based on his recent performances, it is completely understandable why many people rate him highly. He looked very competitive against Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz, but we believe the market may be pricing those performances a little too heavily. Zepeda is a completely different type of problem.

Zepeda is not a fighter who tries to win fights with one big shot. He wins through constant pace, body work, combinations, and pressure that builds round after round. He is a southpaw, a more natural lightweight, taller, longer, and brings much higher punching volume. The danger with Zepeda is not necessarily in the first three rounds. The danger is that after round six or seven, opponents start finding fewer clean exits, they are forced to defend more, and the physical pressure begins to wear them down.

A lot of people may look at the Shakur Stevenson fight and think the blueprint against Zepeda has already been shown. But Roach is not Shakur. Stevenson neutralized Zepeda’s pressure with elite footwork, distance control, and constant angle changes. Roach is more compact, spends more time in the pocket, and often defends behind a high guard. Against Zepeda, that can be dangerous. If Roach spends too much time blocking and waiting to counter, Zepeda can work head and body and produce the more visible, more exhausting work round after round.

Size also favors Zepeda. He is the more natural 135-pound fighter, while Roach originally made his name as a champion closer to 130 pounds. Roach has proven himself at higher weights, but against Zepeda the physical pressure may show in a different way. It may not come from one single huge punch, but from having to defend, react, move backward, escape the ropes, and absorb body work every single round.

Roach’s path to victory is clear: he needs to counter cleanly, catch Zepeda on the way in, and show the judges the sharper, more accurate shots. That is realistic, so we are not saying Zepeda is an easy pick. However, for that to happen, Roach would need a very disciplined 12-round performance with limited time spent near the ropes. If he gets stuck even for a few rounds, Zepeda’s activity, body work, and pressure can quickly start changing the scorecards.

Another important point is that Zepeda lost to Stevenson, but he did not break. He went the full 12 rounds, kept pushing a high pace, and still put in a lot of work against an elite defensive boxer. Against Roach, we believe Zepeda will have more time to fight his own fight because Roach’s defense is less mobile and less evasive than Shakur’s.

The expected fight script is that Roach may be sharper early with cleaner counters. Zepeda, however, will keep pressing, attacking the body, throwing combinations, and trying to force Roach toward the ropes. In the middle rounds, Zepeda’s pace should start becoming more visible. If Roach cannot keep stepping off to the side consistently, Zepeda’s volume, size, and body punching can become decisive factors.

Overall, this is not about Roach being a bad boxer. Technically, he is very good, and he can absolutely win a decision. But at odds of 2.05, Zepeda looks like value because his style is exactly the type that can make Roach uncomfortable over the long term. He is bigger, a more natural lightweight, southpaw, much higher volume, and if this becomes a grinding pressure fight, that should favor Zepeda.
