Pick: Barcelona to win and over 1.5 total goals
Odds: 1.62
I am backing Barcelona to win El Clásico with at least two goals in the match. My preference for the hosts comes primarily from their attacking output: their advantage is visible not only in goals scored but also in the quantity and quality of their chances. However, Real Madrid are not an opponent I expect Barcelona to neutralise simply by keeping possession. The key is whether the hosts can turn their anticipated initiative into a meaningful advantage in chances while limiting the visitors’ attacking opportunities.
The key domestic league numbers
| Metric | Barcelona | Real Madrid |
|---|---|---|
| Goals scored per match | 4.3 | 2.6 |
| Goals conceded per match | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| Shots on target per match | 8.4 | 7.2 |
| Average possession | 70.2% | 53.2% |
| Expected goals, total xG | 33.6 | 22.2 |
| Big chances created, total | 59 | 35 |
| Touches in the opposition box, total | 366 | 354 |
| Expected goals conceded, total xGA | 9.0 | 9.0 |
Several indicators support Barcelona’s attacking strength. Their average of 4.3 goals is outstanding, but what makes it convincing to me is the accompanying 8.4 shots on target per match, 59 big chances and 33.6 expected goals overall. Together, those figures suggest Barcelona are not simply relying on a handful of unusually effective finishes. They regularly create opportunities from which goals can reasonably be expected. Real Madrid’s corresponding numbers are strong too, but 35 big chances and 22.2 expected goals indicate less attacking production. That is the strongest statistical argument behind my preference for a home win.
The missed chances also need context. Barcelona have missed 33 big chances, compared with Real Madrid’s 22. I do not take that to mean the hosts must automatically finish better this time. What matters is that Barcelona are still averaging 4.3 goals despite those misses. The selection does not necessarily require perfect finishing, although Real Madrid are likely to allow fewer clear openings than weaker domestic opponents. The decisions and execution of Barcelona’s attackers could therefore carry considerable weight.
Real Madrid can threaten with less possession. Barcelona’s average possession of 70.2% and 632.4 accurate passes per match lead me to expect the hosts to take the initiative. However, the difference in opposition-box touches is much smaller: 366 against 354. That is an important warning. Real Madrid do not need an equal share of the ball to reach dangerous areas. Their averages of 7.2 shots on target and 2.6 goals mean Barcelona must remain organised after losing possession. Territorial superiority alone would not amount to control of the entire match.
There is no comparable gap in the defensive figures. Both teams concede one goal per match, and both have allowed 9.0 expected goals overall. Barcelona’s four clean sheets compare favourably with Madrid’s two, but I would not use that difference to describe the visitors as easy to break down. My case for the hosts rests mainly on stronger chance creation, rather than a clear defensive advantage. Real Madrid’s attacking quality means they can remain dangerous throughout a closely contested game.
Recent results and absences call for caution. Barcelona arrive after losing 4–2 to PSG, while Real Madrid most recently beat Leipzig 4–1. Neither result should become a prediction on its own, but the game in Paris demonstrated that Barcelona are not invulnerable. Koundé, Eric García and Dani Olmo are important injury absences for the hosts. For Real Madrid, Vinícius is suspended and Rodrygo is listed as injured. That reduces the visitors’ attacking options, without removing their threat.
Overall, Barcelona’s greater chance production and the initiative I expect from them at home keep me on their side. My selection is Barcelona to win and over 1.5 total goals at 1.62. In practice, that requires Barcelona to score at least twice and win: 2–0 or 2–1 would qualify, but 1–0 would not. A Real Madrid goal is not required, and a high-scoring match would not be enough without a Barcelona victory. Picking the winner is clearly the more demanding part of this combination in my assessment.
