Pick: Real Madrid to Win in Regulation Time @ 1.96
My selection is a Real Madrid win, although this looks a demanding trip to Rome. The hosts have started the season well, conceded few goals and carried a genuine attacking threat. I expect Madrid’s quick attacks and the players available to finish them to make the difference in a close game.
Their domestic attacking figures offer support. Madrid average 2.4 goals and 7.1 shots on target per league match. A total expected goals figure of 19.9 also shows that they regularly create good opportunities. Against Roma, converting those chances will be particularly important: Madrid have missed 22 of their 33 big chances, leaving room for improvement in their finishing.
Roma’s defending deserves respect. They have conceded only three goals across six league matches and kept four clean sheets. Their total expected goals conceded of 6.9 nevertheless suggests the opportunities allowed could have produced more goals against them. That does not mean they will necessarily concede more here, but opponents have found openings despite the strong results.
Tactically, I see Roma’s ball-winning against Madrid’s quick forward attacks as an important contest. Gasperini’s side average 5.2 possession wins in the final third, and the coach has indicated that he intends to maintain their usual approach. If Roma push forward, space could become available behind their defenders. My selection relies partly on Madrid turning some of those situations into direct threats.
Mbappé, Vinícius and Bellingham are all in the travelling squad, giving Madrid several options to finish their attacks. For Roma, Svilar’s injury means Gollini is expected in goal, while Cristante is also unavailable. The goalkeeper change matters, although it does not automatically make Roma’s defence weak. Their excellent goals-conceded average must now be assessed with a partly changed lineup.
Recovery could also play a role. Roma spent much of their league match against Como playing with ten men, and Gasperini highlighted how demanding that game had been. Madrid’s schedule is busy too, so I would not claim a clear freshness advantage. The changes available to both coaches could nevertheless become important as they try to maintain the tempo later in the match.
The main concern is Roma’s own attacking strength. They average 2.3 goals and 6.2 shots on target per game, while Madrid have kept only two league clean sheets. If Roma win possession in dangerous areas, the visitors could face difficult spells. A draw is therefore a meaningful risk for this selection.
