Picks
- Atlético Madrid to Win & Under 4.5 Total Goals @ 1.78
For Atlético Madrid vs Málaga in the LaLiga opener, my preferred bet builder is Atlético Madrid to Win & Under 4.5 Total Goals @ 1.78. This is one of the biggest quality gaps of the opening round. Atlético start at home, while Málaga return to the top flight after eight years. The pick fits the most realistic match script: Atlético control, Atlético win, but not a wild five- or six-goal match.
The squad-value gap is huge. Atlético are around €576m, while Málaga are roughly around €31–35m. That difference matters in individual quality, decision-making, bench depth, physical level and match-winning options. For a newly promoted side, starting the season at the Metropolitano is a very difficult first test.
Atlético’s identity under Simeone remains clear: intensity, controlled defending, strong transitions, set pieces and home pressure. Griezmann’s departure is a major change because he gave them intelligence, connections and final-pass quality, but the attack can now move more clearly around Julián Álvarez. Simeone has already pointed toward that idea, and this home opener is the right setting for Atlético to start building that new attacking structure.
The arrivals also strengthen Atlético’s profile. Hjulmand, Grimaldo, Kang-In Lee and the Romero / Lookman line bring real quality. Grimaldo is especially important because he is not only a defender on the left side, but also an attacking organizer. Hjulmand adds stability, ball-winning and positional discipline in midfield. Atlético’s left side, with Grimaldo and Lookman or a half-space runner, can create serious problems for Málaga’s right side.
Málaga’s story is strong. Juanfran Funes brought the club up from within, and this now looks like a real club project. Their young core with Chupete, Larrubia, Adrián Niño, Aarón Ochoa and Dani Lorenzo is interesting, but opening the LaLiga season at the Metropolitano is a different level. Chupete is the main danger after scoring 24 goals in the promotion season, but he will not get many clean touches in this match.
Málaga strengthened mainly in defense during the summer. Fernando Calero, Juan Cruz, José Salinas and Carlos Dotor all fit that idea. It makes sense because survival in LaLiga starts with defensive structure. That also supports the Under 4.5 part of the bet. Funes will not want an open, end-to-end game in Madrid. The first target will be surviving the opening 25–30 minutes, keeping the block compact and slowing Atlético’s rhythm.
For Atlético, FotMob currently lists no official unavailable player, but there are workload and condition questions. Álvarez is the key attacking piece, Sørloth matters for classic penalty-box presence, and Grimaldo, Llorente, Baena and Pubill may have minutes managed after the World Cup period. That does not change the Atlético edge, but it supports the idea of a controlled win rather than a completely stretched high-scoring match.
For Málaga, Diego Murillo is the confirmed absence with an ACL injury. For a newly promoted team, defensive depth matters, especially away at Atlético. Earlier local reports mentioned smaller condition questions around other players, but the latest match page points mainly to Murillo as the official absence. Málaga’s base plan remains compact and cautious.
The weather is also relevant. Madrid is expected to be hot and dry, with around 31°C at match time. That can reduce tempo, especially for Málaga, who will spend long periods without the ball. The Metropolitano pitch is high quality and suits technical football, which favors Atlético, but the heat makes a fully frantic rhythm less likely.
Adrián Cordero Vega has a medium referee profile. Based on the provided 2025/26 data, he showed 77 yellow cards, 1 red card and awarded 5 penalties across 20 LaLiga matches, around 3.85 yellows per game. That is not an extreme profile that should push the match into chaos. The main angle here is not cards; it is Atlético’s quality advantage and a controlled home win.
