Picks
- Real Madrid to Win @ 2.00
For Atlético Madrid vs Real Madrid, my preferred pick is Real Madrid to Win @ 2.00. The price matters here. Around 1.80–1.90, I would be much less interested in backing Real away at the Metropolitano, but at 2.00, the squad-quality gap, Real’s depth and Atlético’s key absences make the away side much more attractive.
Both teams arrive in strong form. Atlético have 13 points after six matches with a 14-6 goal difference, and they have just beaten Real Sociedad 3-0 and Osasuna 4-0. Simeone’s new 5-2-3 structure is starting to work very well. Real have 15 points with a 17-6 goal difference and still have a clear advantage in individual quality and squad depth.
The squad-value difference is huge. Atlético are around €587m, while Real Madrid are around €1.37–1.39bn. A derby cannot be reduced to market value, but the gap becomes important later in the match. Mourinho can change the game with players such as Bernardo Silva, Güler, Camavinga or other top-level attacking options, while Simeone’s rotation is more limited because of the absences of Barrios and Sørloth.
Pablo Barrios is Atlético’s most important absence for me. Losing him does not only remove one midfielder; it reduces ball carrying, buildup quality and the ability to escape pressure. Hjulmand and Koke can provide stability, but they are a less dynamic pairing. Against Real’s first line of pressure, with Valverde and Bellingham attacking second balls, that can become a major issue.
Sørloth being out is also important. Atlético lose a different type of striker who can hold the ball physically, attack crosses and provide a direct outlet under pressure. Jonathan David offers more movement and combination play, while Julián Álvarez returning gives Simeone an excellent second-half weapon, but without Sørloth there are fewer ways to change the attacking profile.
For Real, Militão is an important loss, especially against Atlético’s transitions, while Rodrygo reduces attacking depth. However, Camavinga, Güler and Bernardo Silva are available again. That gives Mourinho far more tactical flexibility, which can be decisive in a tight derby during the final 30 minutes.
Tactically, Real can attack the spaces behind Atlético’s wingbacks. Giuliano and Grimaldo can take high positions in the 5-2-3, leaving areas that Vinícius, Güler and Mbappé can exploit. Mbappé’s central movement can occupy the three centre-backs, creating more room for wide and half-space attacks.
Atlético also have clear routes to hurt Real. The spaces behind Dumfries and Cucurella can be attacked, Jonathan David can pull Konaté or Rüdiger out of position, and Baena plus Kang-in/Lookman can carry the ball quickly into transition. For that reason, I do not expect a comfortable or one-sided Real Madrid win.
The difference for me is the number of solutions Real have if the first plan does not work. Bernardo Silva, Güler, Camavinga and the attacking rotation allow Mourinho to change rhythm and structure during the match. Atlético’s system is currently working, but without Barrios they lose midfield dynamism, and without Sørloth they lose a direct attacking alternative.
Last season’s 5-2 Atlético win at this stadium shows how difficult the Metropolitano can be for Real. Real later responded with a 3-2 victory at the Bernabéu. These matches have recently produced high quality and major tactical swings, which is why the 2.00 price is important. At this number, Real’s superior depth becomes much more attractive.
Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias is the referee. His current average is around 4.25 yellow cards per match, and he tends to allow physical contact while being stricter with dissent. That can matter in an intense Madrid derby, although cards are not the main angle here.
The weather should be ideal, around 24–27°C, dry with light wind. The Metropolitano pitch has recently been replaced, but it showed no major issue in Atlético’s 4-0 win over Osasuna. Conditions should therefore support a quick, technical match.
