LaLiga – Postponed Round 1 Fixture
Venue: Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid
Picks
- Real Madrid -1.5 Asian Handicap @ 1.88
For Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad, my preferred pick is Real Madrid -1.5 Asian Handicap @ 1.88. This is the first home league match of Mourinho’s second Real Madrid spell at the Bernabéu, and it is a postponed Round 1 fixture. Real already have their first league win after beating Espanyol 2-1 away with a late Carlos Espí goal, while Sociedad started poorly with a 1-0 defeat away to Betis.
The squad-value gap is huge. Real Madrid are around €1.36–1.39bn, while Real Sociedad are around €261.5m. That is more than a five-times difference, and it shows in attacking quality, decision-making, bench depth and physical level. Sociedad have a stable coach in Pellegrino Matarazzo, but the summer was not ideal, with several reports pointing toward limited squad strengthening while preparing for three competitions.
Mourinho’s return is the main Real Madrid story. The first match was not perfect, but the win was important, especially with the squad still building physical rhythm after the World Cup period. Now the setting is very different: first home league match, Bernabéu crowd, and a chance to make an early statement. This is exactly the type of fixture where Real should push for a dominant home result.
The summer arrivals raise Real’s level. Yan Diomandé, Marc Cucurella, Carlos Espí, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konaté and Bernardo Silva give Mourinho more physicality, control and tactical flexibility. Bernardo Silva can organize play next to Valverde, Dumfries adds depth and power on the right, and Cucurella can connect strongly with Vinícius and Bellingham on the left.
Real’s attacking profile fits the handicap. The Vinícius–Mbappé connection is still developing, but the individual quality is already elite. Mourinho wants Bellingham closer to goal, which gives Real another major attacking weapon around the box. With Arda Güler’s creativity, Bernardo’s control and Mbappé’s movement in depth, Real have enough routes to create the two-goal margin needed for this line.
Real have important absences, including Rodrygo, Militão, Tchouaméni, Mendy, Endrick, Asencio and Pitarch, while Bellingham’s status should be monitored after the Espanyol match. Still, this squad has enough depth to handle it. Rodrygo is a major attacking-rotation loss, Militão is a top centre-back and Tchouaméni gives midfield balance, but Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Valverde, Vinícius and Mbappé keep Real well above Sociedad’s level.
Real Sociedad’s start was not convincing. They lost 1-0 to Betis, created only 6 shots, and Remiro needed 6 saves to keep them in the match. That is a major signal before going to the Bernabéu. If Sociedad show the same lack of attacking sharpness, Real can keep them pinned back for long periods.
Sociedad also have several squad issues. Odriozola’s absence affects right-side defending and rotation, Guedes’ uncertain status removes speed and one-vs-one threat, while Gorrotxategi and Pablo Marín reduce midfield depth. Oyarzabal is expected to start, which is important for their attack, but one player does not fully solve the lack of attacking volume they showed against Betis.
Tactically, Real Madrid’s left side can be the key area. Cucurella, Vinícius and Bellingham can create major problems for the Aramburu/Zubeldia side. On the right, Dumfries’ depth runs can also be dangerous, especially if Kubo cannot track back with full discipline. If Sociedad are pushed too deep, Mbappé and Bellingham can constantly attack the box and the spaces around it.
Sociedad’s best route is through Kubo, Oyarzabal and fast transitions, but at the Bernabéu that requires clean first passes, composure and precise timing. Based on their passive attacking display against Betis, this is a tough setup for them. Real Madrid should dictate a much higher level of pressure and tempo at home.
The conditions also favor Real. Madrid should have dry evening weather around 23–25°C, with no major rain issue. The Bernabéu surface is built for fast, technical football, which suits Real’s wide play, transition speed and attacking quality.
