I am backing Tottenham to avoid defeat in this London derby. That is not because their attacking performances have been more convincing than Chelsea’s. The hosts have clearly delivered more in front of goal. My selection is built around the vulnerabilities that remain in Chelsea’s defending despite their scoring output. Tottenham do not need to dominate the match or win it for this bet to succeed.
The key domestic league numbers
| Metric | Chelsea | Tottenham |
|---|---|---|
| Goals scored per match | 2.4 | 0.9 |
| Goals conceded per match | 1.9 | 1.4 |
| Shots on target per match | 5.6 | 3.9 |
| Touches in the opposition box, total | 198 | 206 |
| Corners, total | 41 | 46 |
| Set-piece goals scored, total | 6 | 1 |
| Set-piece goals conceded, total | 6 | 2 |
Chelsea score regularly, but they also allow opportunities. Their averages of 2.4 goals scored and 1.9 conceded suggest that attacking strength has not been matched by the same defensive stability. They have kept only one clean sheet, while their total of 10.6 expected goals conceded is not among the league’s better records. Tottenham may therefore find some worthwhile openings without needing an exceptional attacking performance. However, Chelsea conceding would not automatically deliver a point for Spurs: the visitors must also handle the threat at the other end.
The corner numbers highlight a relevant matchup. Tottenham lead the division with 46 corners, while Chelsea have conceded six set-piece goals, the highest total in the league. For me, that provides a specific route to an important away goal. There is a significant qualification, though: Spurs have scored only once from set pieces themselves. The volume of opportunities and the opponent’s vulnerability fit together, but Tottenham’s execution so far does not justify excessive confidence.
Tottenham need more threat from their possession. Their average possession of 59.8%, 472 accurate passes per match and 206 touches inside the opposition box suggest they are not simply being kept away from dangerous areas. The problem is that this has produced only 7.5 expected goals overall and an average of 0.9 actual goals. They have missed 12 of their 15 big chances, but I would not blame everything on finishing. The quality and creation of opportunities also need improvement. Their route to a result here requires more decisive attacking actions alongside the passing.
The visitors’ defensive figures offer a slightly better foundation. Tottenham concede 1.4 goals per match and have allowed 9.5 expected goals, both better than Chelsea’s corresponding numbers. That does not make their defence reliable enough to take for granted. Chelsea’s average of 5.6 shots on target is a clear warning, and the hosts are dangerous from attacking set pieces too, with six goals scored that way. I am not selecting X2 against a harmless Chelsea side, but against one whose attacking and defensive performances can both contribute to an eventful match.
Recent results and team news also demand caution. Chelsea arrive after beating Bournemouth 5–1 and Everton 2–0, while Tottenham earned their first league win by defeating Coventry 3–1. Emiliano Martínez and Reece James are important absentees for the hosts. Tottenham are without the suspended Bentancur, with Bergvall and Sávio among their injury concerns. Porro has returned to training, although that does not confirm his availability. The visitors’ squad situation is therefore far from straightforward either.
Overall, Chelsea’s defensive vulnerabilities, Tottenham’s slightly better defensive figures and the potential opportunities from corners form my case for an away result. My selection is Tottenham or draw at 2.08. The main concern is clear: Chelsea have been considerably more productive in attack, while Spurs still need to demonstrate that their possession can become a meaningful goal threat against stronger opposition.
