Ipswich Town vs Liverpool

Premier League
Venue: Portman Road
Referee: Darren England

Picks

  1. Liverpool to Win & Over 1.5 Total Goals @ 1.88

For Ipswich Town vs Liverpool, my preferred pick is Liverpool to Win & Over 1.5 Total Goals @ 1.88. This is a league match, not a cup rotation spot, and Liverpool need a proper response. Iraola’s side are still winless after two rounds, drawing 2-2 against Newcastle and 2-2 against Nottingham Forest. A third league match without a win would create early pressure around the project, so I expect a serious Liverpool setup here.

The squad-value gap is massive. Ipswich are around €208.7m, while Liverpool are around €979.5m. That is close to a five-times difference, and it shows mainly in attack and midfield. Ipswich spent heavily after promotion and are no longer a classic small-team squad, but there are many new players, so the chemistry is still developing.

Ipswich have 3 points after 2 matches: a 2-1 home win over Sunderland, followed by a 5-2 defeat against Manchester United. The United match is the key warning sign for this pick. Ipswich were competitive for the first 50–55 minutes, but then fell apart. United finished with 33 shots and around 4.6–5.0 xG against them. Against a Liverpool attack, that defensive profile is a major problem.

Liverpool’s attacking quality is very strong. Isak, Wirtz, Gakpo, Szoboszlai, Victor Muñoz and now Barcola give them enough firepower to create constant pressure at Portman Road. Iraola’s system is not fully stable defensively yet, but with the ball and in the final third, Liverpool clearly have the level to produce a two-goal match. That is why Over 1.5 goals fits well with the Liverpool win. A 0-2 or 1-2 is already enough.

Ipswich under Gary O’Neil want to be braver and more pressing-oriented at home. That can make the match entertaining, but against Liverpool it also creates danger. If Ipswich step higher and Liverpool play through the first press, Wirtz and Isak can receive in dangerous spaces between and behind defenders. If Liverpool score first, Ipswich will need to open up, and that can lead to the second or third away goal.

Ipswich do have attacking tools through Enciso, Fatawu, Maeda and Emersonn/Akpom, but their absences and player-status questions matter. Philogene being out removes creativity and wide depth, while Matusiwa and Florentino Luís are important for midfield defending. Emersonn’s status is a key striker question. Against Liverpool, those positions matter because the first ball-winning moments, central protection and transition quality are crucial.

Liverpool also have absences, but not enough to change the match picture. Ekitiké is a major long-term attacking-rotation loss, Bradley and Gomez affect defensive depth, and Chiesa’s situation reduces wide variation. Still, with Isak, Wirtz, Gakpo, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Frimpong and Barcola, Liverpool have several attacking routes Ipswich will struggle to cover for 90 minutes.

The tactical key can be Enciso against Liverpool’s midfield. If he turns behind Szoboszlai and Gravenberch, Ipswich can create dangerous moments. But that does not damage the selected market, because Liverpool to Win & Over 1.5 still works even if Ipswich score. The core idea is Liverpool’s attacking volume and Ipswich’s defensive vulnerability.

Iraola has highlighted the need to work on defensive balance, so I do not expect Liverpool to play completely reckless football. After the poor start, the better match picture is controlled but aggressive away pressure: more possession, territorial dominance, Wirtz moving freely, Isak attacking depth, Gakpo or Barcola stretching the pitch, and Frimpong providing runs from the right.

The weather and pitch conditions are fine. Ipswich should be around 17–18°C on Friday evening, with cloudy conditions and only light rain risk. Portman Road has a natural grass pitch, with no fresh negative surface news. The conditions do not hurt attacking football and should allow a normal Premier League tempo.
